President Joe Biden informed Congress on Monday, January 30, 2023, that he will end the “twin” emergencies, the national emergency and the public health emergency, for addressing COVID-19 on May 11, 2023.
Ending the national emergency and public health emergency declarations will likely restructure the federal response to treat the coronavirus as a threat to public health, managing it through governmental agencies’ normal authorities. Combined with the exhaustion of most federal COVID-19 relief funds, ending these twin emergencies will shift the development of vaccines and treatments away from the direct management of the federal government.
