On January 26, 2023, the Michigan Court of Appeals overturned a July 2022 Court of Claims ruling (Mothering Justice v Attorney General) that would have enforced two labor-related laws. One law increased Michigan’s minimum wage and increased tipped wages, and the other would have enacted one of most sweeping paid sick leave laws in the country, forcing nearly every business across the state to make significant changes to their paid time off policies (PTO) and procedures. Because the lower court’s decision was reversed, Michigan businesses will not be forced to make changes to their paid time off policies (PTO) and wage schedules on February 19, 2023.
