March 30th, 2022

Most of us have been impacted by a physician in a positive way. Whether it be a simple prescription or a major surgery,  a lot of Americans are able to point to a specific doctor that has helped them through physical adversity at some point in their lives.

March 30th is the country’s way of saying ‘thank you’ to the physicians who continually put their patients first day after day. Take the time today to reach out to a physician who has helped you and let them know they are appreciated.

Did you know?

The holiday was first established in Winder, Georgia on this date in 1933 by the wife of a doctor, Eudora Brown Almond. Her husband was Dr. Charles B. Almond and Eudora wanted to establish a day that honored physicians. The Winder community honored this idea by mailing greeting cards to their family doctors and laying red carnations on the graves of deceased doctors. The red carnation is considered the symbol of National Doctors Day.

The day was chosen due to a medical breakthrough that occurred 91 years prior when, for the first time ever, Dr. Crawford W. Long used general anesthesia in surgery. In Jefferson, Georgia, on March 30th 1842, Dr. Crawford used ether to anesthetize a patient, James Venable, and removed a tumor from his neck without Venable feeling a thing.
